My paintings are a product of an immersive engagement with my media. They consist of house paint as well as artist acrylics . The surfaces are typically wall paneling as well as birch ply , paper and canvas.
Usually the layering is done by spilling paints of various colors . I use mixing sticks , paint brushes , palette knives and rags to treat the surfaces . This process is repeated till I’m satisfied with the layering and achieved layout.
The emphasis here is on the word process . While, with a classical background in figurative work, I do give attention to method , it is secondary to process in the sense that any one step does not lead to a linear conclusion. A result that appears spontaneous is what I seek above all else and this requires an absolutist mindfulness . In the end suggestive shapes emerge from underlying layers creating an interpenetration of imagery . Though this defies singular interpretation, objective imagery does emerge at times. Unlike some abstract artists I leave such imagery in place , choosing to work toward a feeling of integrated concreteness with the surrounding areas.
I do not normally title my pieces in recognition of the fact that we all work with unique perceptual filters that not only determine what we see, but how, phenomenologically we project meaning via perception.
